Fire damages attic of Hollywood’s Magic Castle; no injuries reported

A fire broke out in the attic of the Magic Castle, the well-known private magic club and performance venue in Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 5:28 p.m. Tuesday at the three-story Victorian building on West Franklin Avenue in Hollywood Hills. LAFD said first-arriving crews went into offensive mode and coordinated roof ventilation, fire suppression and salvage operations on the third floor.

The department said all occupants were safely cleared from the building and firefighters knocked down the fire in 41 minutes with 68 personnel on scene. Paramedics evaluated several people at the scene, but no injuries were reported.

LAFD later said roof work on the building was identified as a possible cause of the fire. Crews remained at the property Tuesday evening for salvage, smoke removal and overhaul operations.

The Magic Castle serves as the clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts and is one of Hollywood’s best-known specialty venues, hosting magic performances and private events in a mansion-like building near the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Magic Castle was also damaged by an attic fire in October 2011. No one was injured in that incident, but the club closed for repairs before reopening weeks later.
