Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to nearly 3,900
The death toll from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela has risen to nearly 3,900, with more than 16,700 people injured, according to updated figures released by the Venezuelan government.
The government’s latest official update, released on Thursday, listed 3,889 deaths, up from 3,811 a day earlier. The number of injured was unchanged at 16,740. The latest toll comes more than two weeks after the earthquakes struck west of Caracas.
The National Press Workers’ Union said 12 journalists were among those killed in the earthquakes, adding that the last of their bodies had been recovered.
Officials said 6,462 people have been rescued since the earthquakes struck near Montalbán on June 24, in an event the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has described as a doublet. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2 and was followed 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 quake.
The government said 28,836 patients have been treated, up from 27,398 on Wednesday. It also reported 3,931 international rescuers, 30,076 deployed personnel and 29,344 volunteers.
Venezuelan officials have listed 856 affected buildings, including 190 that collapsed. Officials also said 16,891 people are staying in 89 temporary camps.
The government also reported 1,142 aftershocks, an increase of 40 from yesterday’s update.
