Delaware state trooper killed in shooting at Wilmington DMV; suspect dead
One Delaware State Trooper was killed in a shooting at a DMV facility in Wilmington, Delaware, according to officials. Authorities said the shooting suspect was also killed.
The incident was reported at about 2:18 p.m. Tuesday at the DMV on Hessler Boulevard in Wilmington, according to the Delaware State Police, which initially reported an active shooter before later confirming the threat had ended.
In an update, state police said one trooper was confirmed killed during the incident. They said authorities are continuing to assess whether there were additional injuries and asked the public to avoid the area.
Officials said one suspect was taken into custody during the response and was later confirmed dead. Authorities did not release details about the suspect’s identity or how the suspect died.
“We are closely monitoring the situation at the DMV in New Castle, and I want to be clear that there is no active threat to the public at this time,” Governor Matt Meyer said in a post. “Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased. State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts.”
Surveillance footage obtained by local outlets showed a bullet hole in a window at the DMV. Authorities have not released additional details about how the shooting unfolded.
