Iran has released an American woman who had been detained since December 2024 in what President Trump described as a gesture of “goodwill.” He said she is safely outside the country and in good condition

Trump announced the release in a social media post on Wednesday. He did not identify the woman or explain when or how she was released, but said that she was detained while former President Biden was in office.

“Iran has allowed an American citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024, to leave the country,” Trump said. “The United States of America appreciates this gesture of goodwill by Iran.”

The release took place while the U.S. and Iran remain at war. The U.S. resumed a naval blockade Tuesday against ships traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo, while allowing other vessels to use the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest fighting began after Iran attacked commercial vessels in the strait. U.S. forces began striking targets inside Iran on July 7, and Tehran responded by launching missiles at what it said were U.S. assets in neighboring countries.
