Death toll from wildfire in southern Spain rises to 13
The death toll from a fast-moving wildfire in southern Spain has risen to 13 after a 93-year-old British woman died from her injuries, according to regional officials. At least 23 other people have been reported missing.
The woman was injured in the Los Gallardos wildfire in Almería province and admitted to a local hospital. She was stabilized in the emergency department before being transferred to intensive care.
Officials said the woman suffered burns over 20% of her body and had serious preexisting medical conditions. She died Sunday afternoon.
The fire has burned more than 3,200 hectares, or nearly 8,000 acres, around Los Gallardos and neighboring communities. Search teams have been looking for the missing while firefighters continue working to contain the blaze.
Andalusian President Juanma Moreno said the fire appears to have started along a roadside when a broken cable ignited two separate spots. Strong winds then pushed the flames into the mountains, where the fire traveled about 15 kilometers, or 9 miles, in two hours.
Moreno described the wildfire as a “major tragedy” and said some residents may not have followed the instructions they received, contributing to the high death toll.
