7 injured after driver hits pedestrians in Derby, England; suspect arrested
Seven people were injured when a driver hit pedestrians in Derby, England, according to officials. A suspect has been arrested, but authorities have not released a motive.
The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Friar Gate in Derby city center, according to Derbyshire police. Derby is in central England, about 35 miles northeast of Birmingham. Police said the vehicle involved was a black Suzuki Swift.
All seven victims were taken to the hospital, and police said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Authorities said some of the victims were seriously hurt.
Police said a 36-year-old man, originally from India and living in the United Kingdom for a number of years, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
Derbyshire detectives are leading the investigation with support from Counter Terrorism Policing, which authorities said is common in an incident of this kind.
Police said they are keeping an open mind about the motive. They said the involvement of counterterrorism officers does not mean the case is being treated as terrorism.
“It was utterly horrific. People were laying on the pavement covered in blood and on the road,” an eyewitness told DerbyshireLive.
Police have said they do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.
