U.S. troop killed in Iraq as remains found at Iranian attack site in Jordan

Unidentified remains have been found during the search for a U.S. service member missing after an Iranian attack in Jordan. Separately, another American service member was killed while handling explosives from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq.

U.S. military personnel found the remains Sunday at the site of Friday’s attack in Jordan, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). An examination is underway to determine their identity.

Two U.S. service members were killed in the attack, while a third was reported missing. Four others were taken to hospitals in Jordan but have since been discharged.

The strike that killed the service members was the fourth against U.S. forces in Jordan in five days, The New York Times reported, citing multiple American officials. Together, the attacks wounded dozens of personnel and damaged several Black Hawk helicopters.

In a separate incident Saturday, a U.S. service member was killed during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq. A second service member suffered a minor injury and remains under medical care.

Before Friday’s attack in Jordan, the Pentagon had reported that 14 American service members had died during the war with Iran as a result of hostile actions or accidents. Another died from a medical emergency.

The latest fighting began after Iran attacked commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. forces began striking targets inside Iran on July 7, and Tehran responded by firing missiles at U.S. assets in neighboring countries.

The U.S. resumed a naval blockade Tuesday against vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo, while allowing other ships to pass through the strait.
