Bus crashes into supermarket in Salzburg, Austria, killing 1 and injuring 7
A city bus crashed into a supermarket in Salzburg, Austria, after the driver suffered an apparent stroke behind the wheel, killing a pedestrian and injuring seven other people, according to local authorities and Austrian media.
The crash happened shortly after noon Monday in the Itzling district of Salzburg, a city in western Austria near the German border. The bus went off the road, crossed a pedestrian and bicycle path and slammed through the glass front and main entrance of a Billa Plus supermarket.
The bus crashed into the ground-floor lobby area of the supermarket building, which also houses other offices.
A 55-year-old man from Salzburg was struck and killed at the scene. Two other men were seriously injured and taken to Salzburg University Hospital, while five more people suffered minor injuries, according to Der Standard, citing the Red Cross.
Der Standard reported that the 59-year-old driver was among the seriously injured and suffered a medical emergency that led to the crash. He underwent emergency surgery and was in intensive care in stable condition.
The second seriously injured victim was being treated for bone fractures and was also reported to be in stable condition.
A large emergency response was sent to the scene, including police, paramedics, firefighters and a crisis intervention team.
