3 injured after Iranian drone strike on UAE oil port
The United Arab Emirates says its air defenses engaged ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones launched from Iran, with one drone strike causing a fire at a petroleum industrial zone in Fujairah. Three Indian nationals were injured.
The attack happened on Monday, when UAE air defense systems engaged 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and four UAVs launched from Iran, according to the UAE Ministry of Defence.
Authorities in Fujairah, one of the seven emirates of the UAE, said a fire broke out at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone after it was targeted by a drone from Iran. The zone, also known as FOIZ, is a major oil storage and shipping hub near the Strait of Hormuz.
Civil defense teams responded to the fire and were working to bring it under control, according to the Fujairah Media Office.
In a later update, Fujairah officials said three Indian nationals suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. No other casualties were immediately reported.
The missile and drone launches come amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump said Sunday that U.S. naval assets in the region would begin “Project Freedom,” an operation to escort ships stranded in the area after several countries asked for help moving their vessels and crews out of the strait.
