Mexican judge dies after bee attack that injured 11 others
A state judge has died nine days after a swarm of bees attacked people outside a sports complex in central Mexico, leaving 11 others injured, according to local media and emergency officials.
The attack happened on May 3 at the entrance to a sports complex in Guadalupe, a city in Zacatecas state, where families had gathered to watch athletic events. The woman, identified as 45-year-old Oyuki Ramírez Burciaga, died Tuesday after spending nine days in the hospital.
Ramírez Burciaga was a state judge in Zacatecas. She was with her family when the bees attacked and received more than 300 stings, mostly to her face and torso, according to Mexican news outlet Telediario.
Reports said she had tried to protect her 3-year-old son by covering him with a sweatshirt, leaving herself exposed to the swarm.
Emergency management officials said 11 people were injured in the attack, including five who were taken to hospitals because of the severity of their injuries. First responders were also among the injured.
Ramírez Burciaga was hospitalized after the attack, and her condition worsened over the following days. Telediario reported that she was believed to have suffered anaphylactic shock from the large number of stings.
The attack was captured on video, which showed Ramírez Burciaga and her dad being swarmed by bees as she tried to get help from people nearby. BNO News is not publishing the footage because of its distressing nature.
