Prince Harry, Meghan Markle declared husband and wife
The Archbishop of Canterbury on Saturday declared Britain’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle to be husband and wife after the couple said “I will” in a ceremony watched by millions of people around the world.
“In the presence of God, and before this congregation, Harry and Meghan have given their consent and made their marriage vows to each other,” the Archbishop said. “They have declared their marriage by the joining of hands and by the giving and receiving of rings. I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.”
The ceremony took place at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel near London. The wedding, between the sixth-in-line to the British throne and a popular American actress, was seen live on television and the internet by millions of people across the world.
After the wedding, Harry and Meghan walked out of St. George’s Chapel and shared their first kiss as husband and wife. They then went on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of Windsor, where more than 100,000 people were gathered to see the couple.
Hours before the wedding, Queen Elizabeth II made Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex, a title which had not been used since 1801. Meghan joined the royal family upon her marriage to Harry and received the title The Duchess of Sussex.
Prince Harry, who is 33, is sixth in the line of succession to the thrones of 16 independent countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. He follows his father Prince Charles, his brother Prince William, and his brother’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Meghan, who is 36 and was previously married to Trevor Engelson, is well-known for her role as Rachel Zane on the legal drama series “Suits.” Meghan’s relationship to Prince Harry was first confirmed in November 2016, when Kensington Palace said they were a “few months” into their relationship.
