Two police officers shot and killed an armed person who lunged at them in Oakland, California, after fleeing from state troopers, officials say. No officers or bystanders were injured.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. Monday in the 4000 block of International Boulevard. Police Chief James Beere said the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was conducting an investigation when the person fled, leading troopers to request help from Oakland police.

Oakland officers arrived and joined a highway patrol officer in searching for the person, who was found armed with weapons in a public area. Beere said officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by giving commands, but the person refused to comply and attacked them.

Police said officers used less-lethal force before two Oakland officers opened fire when the person lunged at them with a weapon. The person was struck and died at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

Multiple weapons were recovered, but police did not provide details about them. Beere said investigators were canvassing the area for witnesses.

The two officers will be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Oakland police are conducting criminal and administrative investigations, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is carrying out a separate investigation.
