Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Hits $1.4 Million Jackpot in Las Vegas
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has made headlines reporting his taking home of $1.4 million (£1 million) in a gambling windfall during a Las Vegas holiday with his wife and friends last year in his tax returns. While the winnings came from a blackjack session in a traditional casino, it’s more common for fans of gambling to go online to play.
Today, online casinos have made it easier than ever for players to enjoy card games, slots, and other classic casino experiences from the comfort of home. Platforms, of which you can find top choices here, provide gameplay, diverse game selections, and promotions.
Pritzker, a two-term Democrat and heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune, already has a reported net worth of $3.9 billion (£2.9 billion). Despite this financial stability, he described his Las Vegas win as a stroke of luck, showing that even those accustomed to wealth can appreciate gambling.
Pritzker’s passion for poker extends further than his personal enjoyment. He partnered with Jim Gray, the founder of OptionsXpress, to launch the Chicago Poker Challenge, a high-profile tournament that has raised in the millions for the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, an institution Pritzker also helped bring to life.
Although he no longer competes, the tournament has earned a legendary reputation. It was once hosted at the exclusive Casino Club near the John Hancock Building, close to his home.
The event has attracted some of Chicago’s most notable figures, including Citadel’s Ken Griffin, entrepreneur and billionaire Rich Chaifetz, OptionsXpress founder Gray, and even poker professional Phil Hellmuth Jr., who has been a regular participant.
In 2024, Pritzker and his wife, Mary Kathryn, reported a combined income of $10.6 million (£7.8 million). They paid $1.6 million in taxes. Regarding his Las Vegas trip, Pritzker described his winnings as a net figure over the course of the visit, without revealing the specific hand that led to his success. He acknowledged that in casinos, it is easy to continue playing until gains are lost, noting that leaving at the right moment was part of his good fortune.
Under Pritzker’s leadership, Illinois has seen a significant expansion in gambling. In 2019, he signed legislation that legalised sports betting, authorised the development of six new casinos, and permitted more slot machines in bars and restaurants. These measures were designed to boost state revenue and help fund a $45 billion infrastructure plan aimed at improving transport, education, and public facilities.
As he prepares to campaign for a third term, some are wondering if Pritzker’s ambitions could move past the state level, with whispers of a potential 2028 presidential bid. When asked whether his enjoyment of gambling might hinder his political prospects, Pritzker simply noted that voters have long known he’s been fortunate in life, both personally and professionally.
Outside of gambling, Pritzker has become a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, particularly over federal troop deployments in Chicago. Trump has publicly challenged Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on their handling of federal immigration enforcement.
