2 deputies shot in domestic disturbance near San Antonio, Texas; suspect killed

Two deputies were wounded and a suspect was killed during a deputy-involved shooting at a residence near San Antonio, Texas, according to officials.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning at around 8:30 to 8:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Tecumseh Drive, near East Borgfeld Road, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said deputies were responding to a reported domestic disturbance involving a forced entry at a home.

Sheriff’s officials said a woman who lives at the residence with her two children reported that a male suspect with a prior connection to the residence forced entry into the home. Authorities said the woman fled with the children and called 911 before deputies arrived.

Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect after speaking with the woman. Officials said the suspect retreated into a makeshift bedroom area attached to the front of the residence, where he produced a firearm and began shooting at the deputies from a distance of approximately six to eight feet.

One deputy was struck in the hip and another was struck in the hand, both suffering through-and-through gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials said both deputies returned fire, striking the suspect twice in the upper body. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said both deputies were taken to University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. One deputy has more than 10 years of service, while the other has about two years with the sheriff’s office.

The suspect was described as a 38-year-old Hispanic man. Officials said they were not releasing his identity pending further investigation.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect is believed to have a criminal history and outstanding warrants from prior incidents.

The woman and her two children, both under the age of 10, were not injured and are being questioned by investigators. Authorities said the woman is being considered a victim.
