Sydney attackers pledged allegiance to ISIS; flag found in vehicle

Australian counterterrorism investigators are examining links to the Islamic State after authorities determined the Bondi Beach attackers had pledged allegiance to ISIS and a flag was reportedly found in their vehicle, according to ABC News Australia.

The attack occurred on Sunday evening near Bondi Beach in Sydney during a gathering connected to the Jewish community, according to New South Wales officials. At least 16 people were killed, including 15 victims and one perpetrator, and over 40 injured.

ABC News Australia reported that investigators with the Joint Counter Terrorism Team believe the two attackers pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. A senior counterterrorism official told the outlet that an ISIS flag was found inside the suspects’ car at the scene.

According to ABC News Australia, Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, examined one of the attackers, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, about six years ago over alleged ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State-linked cell.

Police have confirmed that improvised explosive devices were found at the scene and described them as active but rudimentary.

Authorities earlier on Sunday said they are not searching for additional suspects and that the investigation into possible motives remains ongoing.
