2 members of Mexico’s Congress shot in Sinaloa state
Two members of Mexico’s lower house of Congress were injured in an armed attack in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, officials said. One of the lawmakers is in serious condition.
Mexican authorities said the shooting took place Wednesday afternoon in the city of Culiacán, when a group of gunmen opened fire on lawmakers Sergio Torres Félix and Elizabeth Montoya Ojeda, wounding both, as well as a bodyguard.
Authorities said the lawmakers and the injured bodyguard were taken to hospitals, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya said Torres Felix, a lawmaker with the Citizens’ Movement party, remains in serious condition and was undergoing surgery, while his colleague Montoya Ojeda is out of danger.
The governor said the bodyguard, who was driving the vehicle carrying the lawmakers, was not seriously injured.
The governor added that there are initial indications that one of the lawmakers’ bodyguards returned fire and wounded one of the gunmen.
Authorities later located a white Nissan Versa believed to be linked to the attack, with bullet damage to the rear window. No arrests have been reported.
Sinaloa, particularly the city of Culiacan, has seen sustained cartel-related violence in recent years, including intensified conflict following the July 2024 capture of longtime Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada near El Paso, Texas.
