NORAD aircraft to deploy to Greenland for planned operations

NORAD aircraft will soon arrive at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland to support long-planned defense activities, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said. The activity is coordinated with Denmark.

NORAD said Monday that the aircraft will operate alongside assets from bases in the continental United States and Canada as part of sustained, dispersed operations conducted across its Alaska, Canada and U.S. regions.

The command said the activity was coordinated with Denmark, that all forces are operating with the required diplomatic clearances, and that the Government of Greenland has been informed. NORAD said such operations are routine.

The deployment comes as Denmark’s Defense Intelligence Service has, for the first time, classified the United States as a security risk, according to Politico. In its 2025 intelligence outlook, the agency warned that Washington is increasingly prioritizing its own interests and using economic and technological power as leverage, including toward allies.

According to the assessment cited by Politico, the intelligence service said the United States has used economic pressure, including threats of high tariffs, and no longer excludes the use of military force even against allies, a reference to U.S. efforts to gain control of Greenland.

Trump said last week that the United States would impose a 10 percent tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland starting Feb. 1, with the rate increasing to 25 percent on June 1 unless an agreement is reached for what he described as the “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
