Verizon says nationwide outage not linked to cyberattack; service restored
Verizon said there is no indication that a major outage affecting thousands of customers across the United States is related to a cyberattack, according to a statement from the company. The outage has been resolved.
The outage began at around 12:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with nearly 180,000 reports of issues related to Verizon submitted to DownDetector across the United States. The reports continued throughout the afternoon and evening.
“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” Verizon said in an initial social media post. “Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly.”
The cause of the outage is not known, but responding to inquiries from BNO News, a Verizon spokesperson said “there is no indication that the event was related to a cyberattack.”
In their latest updates, Verizon said the outage has been resolved, adding that they will also provide account credits to affected users.
