4 killed, 29 injured in 36-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 in Colorado

Four people were killed and 29 others were injured in a large multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 in southern Colorado, according to officialsl. A total of 36 vehicles, including seven semi-trucks, were involved.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:02 a.m. Tuesday on southbound I-25 near milepost 92, just south of Pueblo Boulevard in Pueblo, about 45 miles south of Colorado Springs.

Investigators determined that 29 passenger vehicles and seven semis were involved in the pileup. Troopers said heavy winds in the area were blowing dirt across the highway, creating “brown out” conditions with low to no visibility for motorists.

Authorities said two of the four people killed were adult men from Walsenburg, Colorado. The other two were adult women, one from Rye and one from Pueblo.

At least 29 people were transported to two area hospitals. Officials said seven sustained serious bodily injuries and one person is in critical condition. The remaining 21 were treated for moderate to minor injuries.

Colorado State Patrol Major Brian Lyons said the pileup included commercial motor vehicles, pickup trucks pulling horse trailers, SUVs and passenger vehicles, and involved a combination of two separate crashes on both sides of the highway.
