Tropical Cyclone Horacio strengthens into first Category 5 equivalent storm of 2026
Tropical Cyclone Horacio has intensified into a Category 5 equivalent storm in the South Indian Ocean, becoming the first cyclone worldwide in 2026 to reach that intensity, according to meteorologists.
In its latest advisory Tuesday, the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said Horacio is producing sustained winds of 140 knots, or about 161 mph (259 km/h), placing it at the highest level of the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale used in the United States. The storm is moving south-southwest over open waters east of Madagascar.
Satellite imagery shows a compact, highly symmetrical cyclone with a clearly defined eye. The JTWC said environmental conditions remain favorable, citing warm ocean waters, low vertical wind shear and strong upper-level outflow.
The Mauritius Meteorological Service issued a heavy swell warning for Rodrigues at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, valid until early Wednesday. Rodrigues is a small island that forms part of the Republic of Mauritius, located about 350 miles east of the main island.
Forecasters said swells generated by Horacio are producing waves of up to 7 meters, or about 23 feet, beyond the reefs. The swells are also affecting lagoons and may break along low-lying coastal areas, particularly during high tide.
Local officials in Mauritius advised fishermen, boaters and the public not to venture out to sea or along beaches while dangerous marine conditions persist.
