About 140 U.S. troops injured since start of war with Iran

About 140 U.S. service members have been wounded since the start of Operation Epic Fury, the Pentagon said, in the first official overall injury count from the war with Iran.

In a statement shared by CNN’s Natasha Bertrand on Tuesday, chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said approximately 140 U.S. service members had been wounded over 10 days of sustained attacks. Most of the injuries were minor, and 108 troops have already returned to duty.

“Eight service members remain listed as severely injured and are receiving the highest level of medical care,” Parnell said.

The statement came shortly after Reuters reported, citing two people familiar with the matter, that as many as 150 U.S. troops had been wounded in the conflict. Before that report and the Pentagon’s statement, the military had publicly disclosed only that eight U.S. personnel had been seriously injured.

At least seven U.S. service members have died since the operation began, including six killed in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait and another killed in Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, a U.S. National Guard soldier who was also an NYPD officer died in Kuwait during what officials described as a health-related incident tied to a medical emergency. U.S. Central Command said the cause of death remains under review.
