Drone attack reported at U.S. Embassy in Baghdad
A wave of drones targeted the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, according to early reports. It was not immediately clear whether the embassy was hit or whether there was damage elsewhere in the Green Zone.
The attack happened early Tuesday in Baghdad’s Green Zone, the heavily fortified district that houses Iraq’s government buildings, foreign embassies and the U.S. Embassy. The Jerusalem Post, citing Iraqi security officials, reported that at least five drones were used.
Footage from the area showed air defenses attempting to intercept the drones, with at least one seen going down and exploding on the ground. Other reports said at least one drone caused a fire at a residence in the area.
Before the latest wave, a drone hit Baghdad’s Al-Rasheed Hotel inside the Green Zone, according to Reuters. Iraq’s interior ministry later said the drone struck the hotel’s upper fence and caused no casualties or material damage.
