Florida woman stabs trooper multiple times during traffic stop
A Florida state trooper was stabbed multiple times by a woman during a traffic stop in Miami-Dade County, according to officials. The woman was then shot by the trooper.
The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday on State Road 836 near Northwest 107th Avenue in Miami-Dade County, part of the Miami area in South Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers had responded to reports of a reckless driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.
According to the agency, a trooper found the vehicle in the grassy center median and made contact with a woman who had a young child in the car. During the encounter, the woman pulled a knife and stabbed the trooper in the head, neck and shoulder, the highway patrol said.
The trooper then fired his weapon and struck the woman, according to the agency. Both the trooper and the woman were taken to HCA Kendall Trauma.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the woman was later found to have active arrest warrants for child neglect, child abuse and fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Authorities said she will be booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail once she is medically released from the hospital.
The Department of Children and Families took custody of the child, according to the highway patrol. The agency said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reviewing the trooper’s use of force, as is standard in officer-involved shootings.
