Explosion causes minor damage at U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway
An explosion struck the consular entrance to the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, according to Norwegian officials. The blast caused minor damage, but no injuries were reported.
The incident was reported at about 1 a.m. near the embassy on Morgedalsvegen in western Oslo, the Norwegian capital. Oslo Police District said it sent major resources to the area and was in contact with embassy officials.
Police initially said they were investigating a loud bang or possible explosion near the embassy and did not know exactly what had happened or who might have been involved. NRK later reported that police confirmed an explosion had hit the embassy.
Police incident commander Michael Delmer told NRK the explosion occurred at the consular entrance. He said the damage was minor, but police were not yet disclosing what exploded or providing further details because the investigation was still at an early stage.
Faytuks News reported that residents described hearing a large blast, followed by heavy smoke. Norwegian media referred to what they described as a blanket of smoke in the area.
The incident comes as tensions remain high over the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran, though police have not indicated the explosion was linked to those hostilities.
The State Department maintains a Level 1 travel advisory for Norway, the lowest level in its system, advising Americans to exercise normal precautions.
