Multiple pedestrians hit by driver in Derby, England; suspect arrested
Multiple pedestrians have been struck by a driver in Derby, England, leaving several people injured, some seriously, according to officials. A man in his 30s has been arrested.
The incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Friar Gate in Derby city center, according to Derbyshire authorities. Derby is in central England, about 35 miles northeast of Birmingham. Police said the vehicle involved was a black Suzuki Swift.
Ambulance crews treated a number of victims at the scene before taking them to the hospital, police said. Officials have not released the total number of people injured, the severity of each victim’s injuries or the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
“It was utterly horrific. People were laying on the pavement covered in blood and on the road,” an eyewitness told local outlet DerbyshireLive.
Police said officers stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved shortly after the crash. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and remains in custody.
The incident is under investigation, and police appealed for anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident to come forward.
“Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public,” police said.
