7 dead, including gunman, after shooting spree in Kyiv, Ukraine
A gunman killed at least six people in Kyiv, Ukraine, after opening fire on civilians in the street and inside a supermarket before he was shot dead by police, according to officials. At least 14 other people were injured, including a child.
The attack happened on Saturday in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district, where officials said the gunman first set fire to an apartment before going into the street with a weapon and shooting at people at random.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said the attacker first set fire to an apartment, then went out onto the street with a weapon and shot four people dead. He said the gunman also took hostages at a supermarket, killing one of them before he was eliminated. Four hostages were rescued.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said doctors later confirmed that a woman hospitalized with serious injuries died, bringing the death toll to six.
Officials said 14 people were reported wounded, though Zelenskyy said that number could rise. Among the injured was a 12-year-old child.
Footage from the scene showed the gunman walking through the street firing repeatedly, including at a woman at close range. Surveillance video from inside a supermarket showed him carrying what appeared to be a rifle before he was neutralized inside the store.
Zelenskyy said investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine were examining all circumstances of the attack and had begun reviewing the suspect’s phone, electronic devices and contacts.
Officials said the gunman had previously been prosecuted for criminal offenses, had lived for years in the Donetsk region, and was born in Russia. Authorities said his motive remains under investigation.
