Canadian woman killed, 4 tourists injured in shooting at Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico
A gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacan pyramids in central Mexico, killing a Canadian woman and injuring four others before fatally shooting himself, according to Mexican officials.
The shooting happened Monday afternoon at the Pyramid of the Moon inside the Teotihuacan archaeological zone, northeast of Mexico City, one of Mexico’s most important ancient sites. Officials said the gunman opened fire near the monument before turning the weapon on himself.
A 32-year-old Canadian woman was killed, while four other foreign nationals were shot and injured in the attack. Officials said the victims were two Colombians, one Russian and another Canadian. One of them was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Three other visitors were injured as they tried to flee the site, falling on the stairs at the pyramids. Those victims included a minor.
Authorities have not identified the suspect or released a possible motive. Local media reported he was armed with a revolver, while images from the scene appeared to show him wearing tactical-style pants and boots, though authorities have not confirmed that detail.
Teotihuacan is one of Mexico’s most visited archaeological areas and is best known for its monumental pyramids, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. The site was one of the largest urban centers in the ancient Americas and is a major destination for both Mexican and foreign visitors.
