Number of tourists injured in Teotihuacan pyramids shooting rises to 13

The number of people injured in the shooting at the Teotihuacan pyramids in central Mexico has risen to 13, including seven people who were shot, among them two U.S. citizens, according to updated information released by Mexican authorities. A Canadian woman was killed in the attack and the gunman later died at the scene.

The shooting happened at about 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Pyramid of the Moon inside the Teotihuacan archaeological zone, northeast of Mexico City, one of Mexico’s most important ancient sites. Mexican media reported the gunman opened fire at random.

Authorities had said earlier that a 32-year-old Canadian woman was killed, while four other foreign nationals were shot and injured in the attack. One of them was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

An updated casualty report released later Monday showed 13 people were injured in total, including seven with gunshot wounds.

Those listed as shot were a 6-year-old Colombian boy, a 37-year-old Colombian woman, a 29-year-old Canadian woman, a 32-year-old Russian man, a 13-year-old Brazilian girl, a 29-year-old American man and a 61-year-old American woman.

The other injured included four more U.S. citizens, a 55-year-old Brazilian woman and a 22-year-old Colombian woman. Their injuries were described as falls, abrasions or other non-gunshot trauma.

Mexican media reported the suspect was a man between 25 and 30 years old who climbed the stairs of the Pyramid of the Moon to the first level before pulling out a gun and opening fire.

A group of visitors was unable to escape, and the attacker allegedly ordered them to lie on the ground before walking to another spot, reloading and returning to continue shooting.

National Guard personnel at the scene opened fire at the attacker, according to Mexican media, though it was not clear whether he was struck. Officials said the gunman later shot himself.

Authorities have not identified the suspect or released a possible motive. Local media reported he was armed with a revolver and a knife, while images from the scene appeared to show him wearing tactical-style pants and boots, though authorities have not confirmed that detail.
