The smart way to declutter your home for a stress-free renovation

Renovating your home is an exciting project to undertake, but it will disrupt daily life. Rooms fill up with tools and materials, furniture must be moved, and builders need access to work safely. The process can quickly descend into chaos. One simple way to reduce renovation-related stress is to declutter beforehand. Clearing out unused items, organising possessions, and planning where things will be stored can streamline the project and also protect your belongings. Whether you are renovating a single room or undertaking a whole-house project, here are a few decluttering strategies to help you create a calmer, more organised environment before the first hammer swings.

Start decluttering at least six months before your remodel

Don’t leave decluttering until the few weeks before builders arrive. Renovations inevitably take longer than you’d expect – especially since supply chain delays following Brexit and the pandemic have made materials harder to source. Start clearing things out six months before the renovation date so you have enough time to sort through belongings properly.

Begin by taking a room-by-room inventory (you can use an app to make it easier). Walk through each space and note any large furniture, appliances, decorative items, and everyday clutter. And check the kitchens and loft for forgotten items such as old gadgets and boxes of paperwork. Then, you can better decide what to get rid of.

Use the four-Box system: Keep, donate, recycle, bin

The four-box method is one of the most efficient ways to declutter. Sort items into either ‘keep’, ‘donate’, ‘recycle’, or ‘bin’. Donate any useful items that you don’t need to charities such as the British Heart Foundation (which will collect second-hand furniture). Remember that under WEEE regulations, you must recycle electrical goods through designated collection points rather than put them out with general waste.

Pods and units: Short-term solutions for storing your possessions

Many of your belongings will need to be protected from dust and vibrations during the renovation. Short-term storage is a great solution. A 2023 report from the Federation of European Self Storage Associations noted 20% growth in the sector, reflecting how many households are choosing temporary storage during home improvements. You can get units in various sizes – from small lockers for boxes to larger units that can hold several rooms worth of contents. If you live in Cheshire or nearby, self-storage in Poynton can provide secure short-term space while renovation work is underway. You could also opt for mobile storage pods where the containers are delivered straight to your driveway and transported once you’re done packing.

The best way to pack up your belongings

Packing properly before the renovation makes it much easier to unpack once the work is finished. Start by grouping similar items together (books in one box, kitchen equipment in another) so you don’t end up opening every box to find one thing. Use sturdy boxes and label them clearly on multiple sides. Wrap glassware and other fragile items in packing paper (or, better yet, bubble wrap) and place them upright with cushioning. It’s also a good idea to create a small ‘daily essentials’ box that contains phone chargers, key documents, medication, and basic kitchen supplies so they don’t get lost in the general chaos of the renovation.

Beyond landfill: Use eco-friendly disposal methods

You will inevitably end up with items that cannot be kept or donated. Still, don’t head to the landfill just yet. Your local council will offer bulky waste collection services for large household items such as broken furniture or appliances. And look into recycling and reuse initiatives such as Freecycle, or apps like Olio that enable neighbours to exchange useful goods. With household recycling rates reaching 44.4%, it’s clear that many communities are actively working to reduce waste.

Look forward to a smooth home renovation project

Remodelling your home is stressful enough. Make it easier on yourself by reducing unnecessary clutter ahead of time. Just a bit of organisation before building work begins can make the entire renovation process much easier to manage.
