10 random shootings in Austin leave 4 injured; 2 suspects in custody
Two suspects are in custody and a third remains at large after a series of random shootings in Austin, Texas, left four people injured, including one seriously, according to police and city officials.
The shootings happened late Saturday and continued into Sunday, primarily in South Austin. Two of the shootings were reported at Austin fire stations, Mayor Kirk Watson said during a briefing.
“We don’t have any specific motive that has been identified,” Watson said. “In fact, these acts appear to be random.”
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said investigators were looking into 10 shootings. Four people have been shot, including one person who suffered serious injuries and three others who suffered minor injuries.
Police initially issued a shelter-in-place warning for parts of South Austin while officers searched for the suspects. The warning was later lifted after two suspects were taken into custody, but police said one person remained at large in the Manor area, east of Austin.
Chief Davis said the suspects were described as two Hispanic males in their late teens, one with medium wavy hair and the other with longer hair. It was not immediately clear whether that description applied to the suspects in custody or the person still at large.
Police said several vehicles were used during the shootings, including a black or dark Hyundai, a gold Hyundai sedan, a silver four-door Mazda and a white Kia Optima. Davis said police were still looking for the Kia at the time of the briefing.
“In addition, I want to remind people to not leave their cars unlocked,” Davis said. “What we are seeing is that these cars are being stolen.”
