14 killed in apartment building collapse in Morocco
At least 14 people were killed and 6 others were injured when a five-story apartment building collapsed in Morocco, according to officials and local media reports.
The collapse happened early Thursday in the Ain Noqbi area of Fez, a city in northern Morocco, bringing a large response from emergency response crews and local authorities.
A medical source told Moroccan outlet Hespress that 14 people were killed and 6 others were injured, with injuries ranging in severity. The ages of the victims have not been announced.
Footage from the scene showed the five-story building had completely collapsed, leaving the structure flattened into layers of concrete and debris. Large sections of the building appeared to have fallen directly on top of each other, leaving little of the original structure standing.
Rescue crews ended the search after checking the rubble and determining there were no reports of anyone still missing, according to local media.
Authorities evacuated nearby apartment buildings after the collapse because of possible safety risks. The building that collapsed had 11 apartments, including 8 that were occupied.
An investigation has been opened under the supervision of prosecutors to determine what caused the collapse. Judicial police were instructed to gather evidence and interview people connected to the case.
The collapse happened months after another building collapse in Morocco killed 22 people and injured 16 others, according to local media.
