18-year-old arrested after Oklahoma lake party shooting that killed 1, injured 22
An 18-year-old Oklahoma City man has been arrested in connection with a mass shooting at an unsanctioned party in Edmond, Oklahoma, where one woman was killed and 22 others were injured, according to police and court documents.
The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. on Sunday near the Scissortail Campground at Arcadia Lake, a reservoir and recreation area in Edmond, north of Oklahoma City. Police said the party began after dark, was advertised on social media and drew a large crowd of young adults from across the metro area.
Jaylan Amhad Davis, 18, was identified in court documents as the “primary aggressor during the shooting,” KWTV reported, citing an affidavit and arrest warrant filed in Oklahoma County. Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a gang-related dispute.
Edmond Police Chief J.D. Younger said officers first received a 911 call at about 8:51 p.m. reporting a loud music party at the campground. Officers were on their way at 9:07 p.m., but the call was initially treated as a noise complaint before dispatchers began receiving reports of shots fired.
Officers arrived at about 9:12 p.m. and found multiple people injured, including victims with gunshot wounds. Police said at least 80 rounds were fired during the shooting.
An 18-year-old woman later died from her injuries, police confirmed Tuesday.
Younger said investigators believe the violence began with an altercation between two females before it escalated into gunfire. Police believe multiple shooters were involved, and one additional suspect remains outstanding.
Multiple witnesses, anonymous tips and a person of interest identified Davis, who investigators said also goes by the nickname “3zzy,” as one of the shooters, according to court documents cited by KWTV.
Witnesses told investigators they heard rapid gunfire that may have come from a Glock handgun modified with a “switch,” an illegal device that can allow a semiautomatic weapon to fire continuously. Investigators also found 9mm shell casings and 7.62-caliber rifle ammunition at the scene.
A search warrant was executed Monday at Davis’ home in Oklahoma City. Investigators found a rifle-mounted light, .40-caliber ammunition and 7.62-caliber ammunition, according to the affidavit. Court documents said the brand of 7.62-caliber ammunition matched shell casings recovered at the shooting scene.
Davis was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on an allegation of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. Younger said Wednesday that the charge is in the process of being upgraded to felony murder.
Court documents said Davis had previously been convicted in cases involving robbery, firearm possession and gang-related offenses, and had been adjudicated as a youthful offender in Oklahoma County.
A judge set Davis’ bond at $1 million cash and ordered GPS monitoring if he is released. Police said most of the wounded victims have since been treated and released from hospitals.
