2 police officers shot, another injured in standoff in Syracuse, New York

Two Syracuse police officers were shot and another was injured during a standoff with a suspect who opened fire on police in Syracuse, New York, according to officials. The suspect has been taken into custody.

The incident began at about 6 a.m. on Saturday, when officers were called to the area of Tyler Court, near The Bricks, after reports that a person was threatening people with a machete and had cut a dog, according to Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin.

Rusin said officers responded to the area and obtained a search warrant as part of the investigation. During the execution of the warrant, the suspect, who was inside one of the residences, began firing at police.

“Two officers were struck,” Rusin said. “They are in stable condition at this point. They were transported to Upstate Hospital. Another officer was injured as well, and he is seeking medical attention.”

Rusin said all three officers are stable. He said police returned fire, and an exchange of gunfire was still happening shortly before he spoke to reporters.

The Syracuse Police Department warned the public at about 10 a.m. to avoid the area because officers were investigating an active shots fired incident. At 12:40 p.m., police said the suspect was actively firing at officers and asked residents to shelter in place.

Police confirmed at around 4:40 p.m. that the suspect had been taken into custody and that there was no further threat to the public. The scene remained active as officers continued the investigation.

The suspect’s identity has not been released, and police have not said whether the individual was injured.
