5-year-old girl survives more than a day in wreck after crash in Colorado

A 5-year-old girl survived for more than a day after a pickup truck rolled off a highway in southwestern Colorado, killing two adults and leaving the wreckage hidden from passing drivers, according to officials.

The crash is believed to have happened at about 6 a.m. on Friday along Highway 160 just east of Bayfield, a town in La Plata County, but the wreckage was not found until about 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Troopers found a blue Chevrolet S10 on its roof off the south shoulder of the highway. The pickup had been traveling east when it left the road and rolled an unknown number of times.

Devante Griffin, 25, and Klariza Tarango, 24, both of Farmington, New Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene. Griffin was driving the pickup, and Tarango was a passenger.

A 5-year-old girl who was also in the pickup was injured and taken to a hospital. She has since been released, the patrol said.

The patrol said the vehicle was badly damaged and could not be seen from the roadway. Officials have not said how the crash was eventually discovered or what the child’s condition was when rescuers arrived.

Investigators are not looking at impairment or excessive speed as factors in the crash.
