Dutch Prime Minister Jetten briefly hospitalized on Bonaire after stepping on jellyfish
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten was taken to hospital Tuesday after suffering an allergic reaction when he stepped on a jellyfish on Bonaire, a Dutch island in the Caribbean. He was released after treatment.
The incident happened on early Tuesday morning when Jetten was swimming ahead of his official program on the island, which is part of the Caribbean Netherlands and located off the coast of Venezuela.
The prime minister was taken to Mariadal Hospital in Kralendijk, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was seen leaving the hospital a few hours later and appeared to be in good spirits.
“I had to be hospitalized for a few hours after a severe allergic reaction,” Jetten said on X. “I feel much better thanks to the excellent care of Fundashon Mariadal and I’m able to resume my working visit to Bonaire with a somewhat adjusted program.”
Talking to a reporter, Jetten said he probably hit a jellyfish.
Jetten missed several appointments due to the incident, including a meeting at the island’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, where Greenpeace had planned a protest. The group is protesting the Dutch government’s decision to appeal a court ruling ordering increased measures to protect Bonaire against the effects of climate change.
