IED found underwater at reservoir dam in Mobile, Alabama

An improvised explosive device (IED) was found underwater at a reservoir dam in Mobile, Alabama and later detonated by bomb technicians, according to officials.

The device was discovered at the Converse Reservoir dam during a routine survey for repair and maintenance, the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) said Thursday. Divers found the device underwater and notified the utility, which contacted the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials described the device as a grenade-type IED. The Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team retrieved it and carried out a controlled detonation.

The response included the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, ALEA Bomb Squad and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team.

“This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals,” MAWSS Director Bud McCrory said.

The Converse Reservoir dam is part of the water system serving the Mobile area. MAWSS said the reservoir and dam are federally designated critical infrastructure, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been notified.

Officials did not say how long the device may have been underwater or who placed it there. MAWSS said it will work with law enforcement agencies to improve security at the reservoir and dam.
