6 found dead inside Union Pacific train car in Laredo, Texas

Six people were found dead inside a Union Pacific train car in Laredo, Texas, near the U.S. border with Mexico, according to police.

Officers responded at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday after a Union Pacific employee reported multiple casualties inside a trailer box car in the 12000 block of Jim Young Way, according to the Laredo Police Department.

Police confirmed that six people were found dead at the scene. The location is on the outskirts of Laredo, near the Union Pacific rail yard in the northern part of the city.

Officials did not release details about how the six people died or how long they may have been inside the train car.

The discovery comes after several days of high temperatures in Laredo, with weather data showing temperatures reaching 95 degrees and a heat index of up to 104 degrees on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities have not confirmed the nationalities of the deceased or whether they were migrants. Laredo sits directly across the border from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and is one of the busiest commercial crossing points between the two countries.

In July 2024, U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Laredo Sector rescued 23 migrants who were trying to stow away on a Union Pacific train. Agents found them locked inside an autorack and safely removed them, according to the agency.
