Person shot by law enforcement near Washington Monument
An individual has been shot by law enforcement near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., under unclear circumstances, according to officials. The incident briefly led the White House to be placed on lockdown.
The shooting happened on Monday afternoon at 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW, near the Washington Monument and just south of the White House complex.
“U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C.,” the agency said. “One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown.”
The Metropolitan Police Department said officers were also at the scene and that the area had been secured. Police said roads in the area would remain closed for several hours.
The shooting followed reports of gunfire near the White House shortly before 4 p.m., according to journalists at the scene. Newsmax Chief Washington Correspondent James Rosen said gunshots were fired near the complex, leading the Secret Service to briefly lock down parts of the White House.
Officials did not immediately release additional details about what led to the shooting.
