1 killed, 8 injured in stampede at World Cup screening in Jordan
One person was killed and eight others were injured in a stampede during a public screening of a World Cup match in Jordan’s capital, according to officials.
The stampede happened early Tuesday inside Hashemite Plaza in central Amman, where thousands of spectators had gathered to watch Jordan play Algeria on giant screens, Reuters reported.
A spokesperson for Jordan’s Public Security Directorate initially said nine people had been taken to a hospital after the stampede, according to Albawaba. One of them died shortly after arriving at the medical center.
The body was transferred to the forensic medicine department to determine the exact cause of death, the spokesperson said.
The other eight people received medical treatment and their conditions were described as stable to moderate.
