3 killed, officer wounded in shooting in Sandy, Oregon
Three people were killed and a police officer was shot multiple times during a domestic incident in Sandy, Oregon, according to officials and court records cited by local media. The suspect was arrested after surrendering to police.
The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday in the 39000 block of Evans Street in Sandy, about 25 miles southeast of Portland, according to Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey. Officers with the Sandy Police Department and deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and shooting.
“During the response, officers and deputies came under gunfire and returned fire,” Huskey said at a briefing on Sunday night. “At this time, I can confirm one of our officers was shot, evacuated from the scene, and transported by Life Flight with multiple gunshot wounds.”
The officer is in stable condition and is expected to survive, Huskey said. The officer’s identity has not been released.
Court records obtained by The Oregonian identified the people killed as Jenna Mary Overson, 37; her mother, Mary Beth Overson, 70, of Gresham; and Kobyn McClure, 16, a freshman at Sandy High School.
The Oregonian reported that Jenna Overson was the wife of Bryan Andrew Moore, 38, the man arrested in connection with the shooting. She had three young sons, ages 10, 8 and 3, according to the outlet.
Chief Huskey said the suspect surrendered to law enforcement just before 8 p.m. and was taken into custody unharmed.
Moore has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, according to The Oregonian. He also faces two kidnapping counts for allegedly using two people as shields or hostages when police tried to arrest him.
Investigators with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team are processing the scene and conducting interviews.
“This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department,” Huskey said. “I know many people are grieving. I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims, our injured officer, their families, friends and all of the first responders in their thoughts tonight.”
