Actor James Handy killed by girlfriend’s son at Los Angeles home

Actor James Handy, who appeared in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Profiler,” “Alias” and “Jumanji,” was stabbed to death at a Los Angeles home by his girlfriend’s son, according to police. The suspect was arrested after flagging down responding officers.

The stabbing happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday when West Valley officers responded to a call of unknown trouble in the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, according to the LAPD.

The 911 caller told dispatchers, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” police said.

When officers arrived, they found Handy, 81, unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to his chest. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect flagged down responding officers nearby and told them he was the person they were looking for, according to police. Investigators said he lived at the home with his mother, who was Handy’s girlfriend.

Police identified the suspect as Michael Gledhill, 44, of Tarzana. He was arrested and booked at Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of murder. His bail was set at $2 million, according to the LAPD.

Handy was a veteran character actor with a career spanning nearly five decades, appearing in films such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” “Logan,” “Unbreakable,” “Arachnophobia,” “The Rocketeer,” “K-9” and “The Verdict.”

On television, he had recurring roles on “Profiler,” “Alias,” “NYPD Blue” and “Melrose Place,” along with appearances on “The West Wing,” “Criminal Minds,” “Law & Order,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “The X-Files.”

Detectives are investigating the murder. Police said it appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the public, but no motive has been released.
