Death toll from Venezuela earthquakes rises to more than 1,700

The death toll from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela has risen to more than 1,700, with more than 5,000 people injured and tens of thousands still unaccounted for, officials and tracking groups said. Three Americans have been confirmed among the victims.

Venezuelan officials said Monday that the confirmed death toll had risen to 1,719, with 5,034 people injured. Thousands more have been treated at hospitals and triage sites since the earthquakes struck west of Caracas near Montalbán.

A crowdsourced tracking site, Desaparecidos Terremoto Venezuela, listed 43,865 people as still unaccounted for. The figure has not been confirmed by officials.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed that three Americans were killed in the earthquakes, according to NewsNation’s Hannah Brandt.

Dozens of international rescue teams remain in the disaster zone, including teams from the United States. Crews have been searching through collapsed buildings and other damaged areas as authorities continue to search through the rubble.

The number of dead is expected to rise as search and recovery work continues.
