Frontier flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago diverted after passenger tries to open emergency doors
A Frontier Airlines flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago was diverted to Miami after a passenger became disruptive, with another passenger saying the man attacked a flight attendant and tried to open emergency doors.
The incident happened Sunday night on Frontier Airlines Flight 3345, which had departed San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was headed to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, according to Frontier Airlines and WFLD, citing the FAA.
The crew reported a passenger disturbance, and the aircraft landed safely at Miami International Airport at about 11:55 p.m. local time, according to the FAA.
“On Sunday, May 31, a passenger on Flight 3345 from San Juan to Chicago O’Hare became disruptive and the flight was diverted to Miami,” Frontier Airlines said in a statement. “Law enforcement boarded the aircraft in Miami and removed the passenger and the flight subsequently continued on to Chicago a few hours later.”
Passenger Josh Longood posted photos and videos on Instagram showing the passenger restrained across several seats. Longood said the man had attacked a flight attendant and tried to open emergency doors before he was tied up.
Longood said the passenger later slipped out of the restraints, forcing him to hold the man down until the plane landed in Miami.
The identity of the disruptive passenger has not been released. Authorities have not said whether he was arrested or what charges, if any, he may face.
The FAA said the incident remains preliminary and could change as more information is gathered.
