Woman killed, 5 injured in knife attack at Russian mall

A woman was killed and five other people were injured when a 19-year-old man stabbed shoppers at a mall in southern Russia, according to local officials. The suspect was detained by a bystander.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m. at a shopping center in Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia, according to Kuban24, citing local police.

Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said a young man attacked visitors with a knife, killing one woman and injuring five others. The injured victims were taken to regional and city hospitals, where their conditions were described as moderate.

One of the victims was a security guard, Kuban24 reported. The woman who died succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital.

Police said the attacker also threw a pyrotechnic device into an area where a children’s entertainment center is located, setting off the fire alarm.

The suspect, identified only as a 19-year-old resident of Krasnodar, was detained by a witness before police took him into custody.

Regional authorities have opened criminal cases on charges of murder and attempted murder. Officials said the suspect has been ordered to undergo a forensic psychiatric examination because of the nature of his actions during the attack.
