Man kills 1, injures others in Paris knife attack
A man has gone on a stabbing spree in the French capital of Paris, killing one person and injuring four others in what appears to be a terrorist attack, officials say. The suspect was shot dead by police.
The incident happened at about 9 p.m. on Saturday when a man attacked people on a street in central Paris, not far from the city’s main opera house. Witnesses said the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he carried out the attack.
One victim was killed and four others were injured, including two people who suffered serious injuries, according to Paris police. Officers who responded to the scene opened fire, killing the suspect.
The Islamic State group (ISIS) said it was behind the attack, claiming that the suspect was one of its “soldiers.” The prosecutor’s office in Paris confirmed that investigators were treating it as a terrorist attack.
France has experienced a number of terrorist attacks in recent years. In November 2015, a group of ISIS militants opened fire at restaurants and a music venue in Paris, killing 130 people and injuring hundreds more, making it the worst attack in France since the end of World War II.
