At least 10 people shot at Mormon Church in Michigan, others missing

A gunman drove his car into a Mormon Church in Grand Blanc, Michigan and started shooting, killing and injuring a number of people before setting the building on fire, according to local officials and witnesses. The suspect was later killed.

The incident began at around 10:25 a.m. on Sunday when officers were called for an active shooter at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 7 miles south of Flint or 45 miles northwest of Detroit. When they arrived, the church was also on fire.

“Officers who were trained immediately responded to the area .. where they met the suspect and they engaged in gunfire with that particular individual, neutralizing that suspect, and that suspect is no longer with us,” police chief William Renye said at a 1 p.m. press conference.

Renye said 10 gunshot victims were taken to local hospitals, including two people who died and several others who were critically injured. Additionally, a number of people remain missing and are believed to be inside the church, which was destroyed in a massive fire.

It’s believed the fire was “deliberately set,” Renye said.

The suspect has been identified as a 40-year-old man from Burton, about 7 miles north of the church. His name was not immediately released and there was no word on a possible motive. A second press conference has been scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
