Four people were found shot to death at a home in Livonia, Michigan, after a man walked out of the house and told officers he had shot his family, according to police. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

The shooting happened at about 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday at 19332 Rensellor Road in Livonia, a suburb west of Detroit, after police began receiving reports of shots fired at the home.

Livonia Police Chief Thomas Goralski said the first officers to arrive saw a man exit the home with his hands raised and his fingers interlocked. When officers asked if he knew where the shots were coming from, he said he had shot his family.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man who lived at the home, was arrested. His name has not been released.

Officers found two victims, a man and a woman, inside a bedroom, and two others, also a man and a woman, in the backyard. All four had suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the victims as Sterling Ray Pierce, 58, the suspect’s father; Holly Marie Kindle, 53, his mother; Tanner Ray Pierce, 22, his brother; and Nevayah May Joslin Finch, 21, his brother’s girlfriend.

Goralski said the suspect’s parents were found in the backyard, while his brother and his brother’s girlfriend were found inside a bedroom.

Police recovered a semi-automatic rifle inside the home, which they believe was used in the shooting. Several other weapons were also found during a search of the house, though police said it was still being determined who owned them.

No motive has been confirmed. Goralski said investigators were looking at a possible motive and that there had been a “contentious relationship” between the suspect and his parents.

Police said they had not been called to the home for any prior incidents involving the suspect and were not aware of any history of mental health issues.

The case remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
