1 killed in train derailment near Barcelona days after deadly rail collision
One person was killed and several others were seriously injured after a landslide caused a wall to collapse onto a commuter train near Barcelona, according to emergency officials. The incident comes days after a separate train crash in southern Spain killed at least 42 people.
The accident occurred Tuesday night on the Rodalies R4 line between Gelida and Sant Sadurní, near Barcelona, according to Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE.
A fire department official said emergency services received the alert at 9:01 p.m. local time and found that an R4 commuter train had been struck after a retaining wall collapsed due to ground movement. About 37 people were aboard the train, according to preliminary figures.
The official said four people were seriously injured and one person died. One person was trapped and had to be extricated by rescue crews. All injured passengers were later removed from the train, and assessments at the scene were ongoing.
RTVE reported that the person who died was traveling in the cab of the train and may have been the driver.
The incident comes days after another major rail accident in Spain, when two high-speed trains collided in Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, after one of them derailed. At least 42 people were killed in that crash, with dozens more injured and more than 10 victims still in intensive care.
