1 dead, 32 injured after college baseball team bus rolls over in Iowa
One person has died and dozens of others have been injured after a bus carrying a college baseball team rolled over in Calhoun County, Iowa, authorities say. A Mass Casualty Incident was declared due to the number of victims.
The crash happened at approximately 11:06 a.m. on Wednesday on State Highway 4 near 220th Street, according to the Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency.
One fatality was confirmed upon the arrival of rescue personnel, though it was not immediately clear if the deceased was a student, staff member, or the driver.
Emergency officials said 32 individuals were triaged and transported to area hospitals for treatment.
The bus was carrying members of the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team, which was traveling to Arkansas for games scheduled later this week, according to KWWL. The bus failed to navigate a curve on Highway 4 and rolled several times.
“Multiple medical helicopters were requested due to the seriousness of injuries,” an official said. Ground ambulances from several surrounding jurisdictions also responded to the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Officials said no names will be released pending the notification of family members.
