A sailor was killed in a shooting aboard the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, which is under construction in Virginia, and another sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement, according to officials.
The shooting happened at about 5:16 a.m. on Saturday aboard PCU John F. Kennedy, also known as CVN 79, according to a Navy spokesperson. The carrier is currently under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.
The sailor who died has been identified as Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jesse Braswell of Colorado, the Navy said in a statement to USNI News.
“Our deepest condolences are with Seaman Braswell’s family, friends and shipmates,” a Navy spokesperson said in the statement
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS, is leading the investigation.
“A sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in connection with the death,” NCIS said in a statement. “Charges have not yet been filed as the investigation remains active and ongoing.”
The identity of the sailor in pretrial confinement has not been released, and officials have not said how the shooting unfolded aboard the carrier.
